A US investor with close ties to Hertha BSC is said to be examining the purchase of a majority stake in the Berlin second division club. He is pursuing an ambitious goal.

Phil Murphy apparently has big plans for Hertha BSC. The US investor is said to be considering joining the Berlin second division club and could take over the majority of the club’s shares. The 68-year-old has known Hertha and Berlin for many years. From 2009 to 2013, Murphy was US ambassador to the German capital. He was appointed by President Barack Obama at the time.

Murphy is also no stranger to football. In the USA he is the main owner of the women’s team New York/New Jersey Gotham FC, which he co-founded. The German national goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, among others, plays there.

Now Murphy is looking into a possible takeover of Hertha. According to information from “Bild”, he contacted Hertha board member Ralf Thaeter some time ago. The former lawyer is considered to be well connected internationally and, among other things, deals with company takeovers.

The US insurance company A-Cap currently holds 78.8 percent of the shares in Hertha-KGaA. A-Cap took over the stake from the previous investor 777 after the latter ran into financial difficulties. 777, in turn, initially acquired 64.7 percent of the shares from Lars Windhorst in 2023. Windhorst had invested a total of 374 million euros in its investment as of 2019.

What is certain is that A-Cap wants to sell the shares. According to the report, there have already been discussions with representatives from Murphy’s environment. The relevant documents can be viewed in a so-called data room.
