It will be an Italian Open for true champions. The 83rd edition of our national tournament will be played at the Turin Golf Club from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th June and was officially presented yesterday in a press conference in Turin, at the Grattacielo Piemonte, and there was no shortage of nice surprises. Starting with the announced presence of Patrick Reed, the American who won the Masters in 2018 and boasts eight other successes on the PGA Tour, the absolute protagonist in the USA’s victory in the 2016 Ryder Cup, so much so that he earned the nickname Captain America. Reed has never been an easy man, many controversies have followed his career, starting with his decision to abandon the PGA to go to the LIV, the league financed by the Arabs which seemed to have to change the world of golf. But Reed announced at the beginning of this season that he had changed his mind and left the new creature to its fate – perhaps sensing before the others the difficulties the league was in so much so that even its survival was left in doubt – and he retraced his steps. Having to serve a one-year ban on the American circuit, precisely because he had chosen LIV, he decided to earn the right to return to America through the DPWorld Tour. And he immediately did so in a big way with two successes this season which also took him to the top of the Race to Dubai (order of merit). He will therefore be the man to beat in Turin.

make way for the brothers

But it won’t just be Reed who will be followed by Italian fans. With him there will be another winner of the Masters, the Englishman Danny Willett, who won Augusta in 2016, i.e. the year in which he also came second in the Italian Open played in Monza at the Golf Cub Milano, behind our Francesco Molinari, Italy’s latest success. Chicco and his brother Edoardo grew up at Golf Torino and therefore never more than in this case can we say that they will play at home. Dodo, present at the press conference yesterday, can’t wait: “I’m happy that the Italian Open is returning to Turin after so many years. Playing at home will certainly be wonderful. There is a field with many excellent players and I’m also happy that Luke Donald is there, the captain of Europe in the Ryder Cups in Rome and New York who has also been confirmed for the next one. I’m very good friends with Luke and it will certainly be a fantastic and beautiful week.” Dodo and Chicco have been vice-captains in the last two Ryders, Dodo has already been called to the same role for the next one in Ireland. It’s clear that the relationship with Donald has grown, it will be nice to see them play together. Among the other big names present are the Chilean Joaquin Niemann, the South African Branden Grace, the Spaniard Eugenio Chacharra and the French Adrien Saddler, reigning champion after his success at the Argentario in 2025.

a city on the green

– It is the fourth time that the Open has been played at the Torino Golf Club. Also present at the press conference were Paolo Zangrillo, Minister for Public Administration; Alberto Cirio, President of the Piedmont Region; Paolo Bongioanni, Councilor for Sport and Tourism of the Piedmont Region; Domenico Carretta, Councilor for Sport, Major Events and Tourism of the City of Turin – the president of federgolf Cristiano Cerchiai did the honours, explaining that there will be many activities on the days of the competition and on those preceding it: “This edition of the Italian Open promises to be innovative, exciting and engaging. A week full of great international golf awaits us, but also with many extra-competition events in the Fan Zone based on lifestyle and entertainment for the public”. There are also many initiatives in the city: the federation will also bring golf to the centre, to Piazza San Carlo, transforming it into a green in the heart of the city.
