Austria starts the first World Cup since 1998 with a dream goal. Then Jordan presses and equalizes. Another Austrian goal was disallowed, but in the end it was still enough to win.
Austria defeated Jordan 3-1 (1-0) on the first matchday in Group J at the World Cup. Ralf Rangnick’s team got off to a good start and took the lead with a dream goal from Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmid (21st).
Afterwards, Jordan kept pushing and had significantly more goals than Austria. After the break, the outsider was rewarded by Ali Al Olwan (50th) – also worth seeing. But after that, the team around ex-Bayern professional David Alaba struggled.
At first, a goal from Marko Arnautović did not count due to a previous handball, but a little later Yazan Al Arab (76th) scored into his own goal and gave Austria the lead. In the twelfth minute of stoppage time, Arnautović scored with a hand penalty to make the final score 3-1.
