In the BR24Sport exclusive interview, Hasan Ismaik unpacks how “Black Wednesday” at TSV 1860 went from his perspective – and makes serious accusations against the executive board around Gernot Mang.
Since June 3rd, “Black Wednesday”, at the end of which TSV 1860 Munich’s forced relegation to the regional league was sealed, investor Hasan Ismaik had reported daily via social media. The person who was to blame for many fans asked daily “questions for thought” as to whether he was actually solely responsible.
In an exclusive interview with BR24Sport, the Jordanian investor now follows up and describes his point of view. Ismaik is placing a heavy burden on the executive board; his statements are a blatant contradiction on the statements made by club president Gernot Mang in the BR24Sport interview a week ago.
Ismaik contradicts eV: “We granted the loan”
Everyone is still concerned with how this “Black Wednesday” or the night before at Grünwalder Straße 114 went. The club had passed the buck to Ismaik’s shareholders: They didn’t pay, so they were relegated, or so the short version was.
Ismaik defends himself against this. The money was there and both sides had reached an agreement by midnight, explains the 48-year-old. This deal was concluded on the assumption that fundamental things would change in 1860. According to his own statement, the investor called for more transparency and more professional structures. His aim was to break the vicious circle of annual financial emergencies. “No company in the world can survive if it needs money every year.” The negotiated deal was “absolutely not against 50+1”.
BR24Sport was presented with a bank statement showing a money transfer of 2.3 million euros that would have been necessary for the license. However, this document neither shows where the money came from nor who the recipient of the sum should be.
Ismaik clarifies: Regional league not “Hasan’s decision”
But early in the morning the club rowed back. “At 2:40 a.m. they changed everything,” the Jordanian explains from his point of view. “They wanted it to continue like this for the next 15 years. So I said ‘no’.” President Mang had spoken of an email in which the shareholders had declared the negotiations to be over. Ismaik now brings up an email from the eV. In which – as the Jordanian describes – they said, “pay the money and keep your mouth shut.” For Ismaik, it’s an affront: “I want to see someone who would accept something like that after remaining patient for 15 years.”
Ismaik does not see himself as the culprit for the second forced relegation within nine years: “What everyone needs to know: The decision to go to the fourth league was not Hasan’s, it was the eV’s.” Rather, the Jordanian suspects that the forced relegation is calculated. Club employees told him “that they (the club, editor’s note) want to get rid of Hasan.”
Ismaik’s wild comparison: 50+1 and the coffee machine
The club, in turn, explained the failed deal by saying that they “cannot ignore the statutory and association law requirements” and thus indicated a renewed attack by the Ismaik side on the 50+1 rule. In the interview, Ismaik denies this several times. “Everything I say, they argue 50+1. If I just say ‘coffee maker’, they shout 50+1.” Finally, the investor makes a general statement: “The big problem is not the money. That has been there for 15 years. The main problem is the management and the club’s leadership.” They try to “protect the identity and the past. (…) But they also have to keep an eye on the future.”
Ismaik open to selling his shares
Ismaik told BR24Sport exclusively that he was still willing to sell his shares. The money is not the deciding factor. “I’m worried about the future of 1860,” said the donor. Accordingly, he will only sell to an investor “who can make sixty grow.” Many interested parties canceled due to the club climate.
Ismaik’s latest statements are unlikely to help improve this. At the same time, they are the verbal prelude to the court case that Ismaik will now take against the eV after the unilateral termination of the cooperation agreement.
