The former Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesborough player’s adventure as England coach has not always been recognized as good. His mandate, however, allowed the three lions to achieve important goals, starting from the 2018 World Cup. Then came the sad European epilogue in 2021, with the final lost at home against the less popular Italy. At the 2022 World Cup, however, the elimination came in the semi-final against France due to an error from the spot by Harry Kane and in 2024 another European Championship final was lost, this time against the Spain of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.

Gareth Southgate has decided to entrust the social his own words in view of the World Cup: “Hello everyone, in view of the England match and the start of the competition, I decided to communicate a little message. The World Cup is always special for me, given that I have experienced it in the last seven editions in different roles: as player, commentator, observer and finally coach. For this edition, I chose not to participate as a commentator on TV. I think talking about kids is not helpful and my words might be misunderstood and used against the national team. Therefore, I would like to stay out of this dangerous circuit. However, I particularly care about making my own congratulations to the team. Our experience together has helped them enter this tournament confident, they know it’s time to win. I can’t wait to cheer them on“.
