Actor Ian McKellen says he threw a Trump spike coming Avengers: Doomsday – on the set of the film, reported The Guardian and Variety. McKellen returns in the film X-Men-to the role of Magneto known from the stories.
According to McKellen, the film’s directors Anthony J. Russo and Joseph Vincent Russo asked him in one action scene to emphasize his character’s anger and power of destruction particularly strongly.
– They told me: “Look like you hate what you’re destroying,” McKellen told the Rome Film Festival.
The actor decided to interpret the instruction in his own way.
– So I stood there and shouted: “Mar-a-Lago!”, McKellen says.
Mar-a-Lago is a luxury resort owned by Trump in Florida, which he has also used as a place for political meetings during his presidency.
McKellen’s comment drew laughter from the audience at the Cinema in Piazza event in Rome, where he spoke about the filming. The event is a series of open-air screenings and discussion sessions featuring international filmmakers.
This is not the first time that McKellen has been critical of Trump. He has previously commented on the president’s policies and public policies. In 2017, he criticized the actions of the Trump administration from the point of view of LGBTQ+ rights, describing them as “terrifying and unnecessary”.
The actor has also stated that he has difficulty understanding Trump’s communication and political style.
– I don’t always understand what he says, McKellen has previously stated and added that Trump should be “more direct” so that he could be taken more seriously.
