From player to assistant: Rio world champion Sami Khedira is apparently about to get his first job in a coaching staff at Spanish first division football club Real Madrid and is expected to assist star coach José Mourinho as an assistant coach upon his return.
As “The Athletic” and the Spanish newspaper “Marca” unanimously reported on Sunday evening, Mourinho’s wish was to bring the now 38-year-old former Real professional back to the Spanish capital as his assistant. Khedira came to Los Blancos at the same time as Mourinho in 2010. Under the Portuguese, Khedira was placed in midfield and won the Spanish double in their debut season together.
Khedira probably hasn’t decided yet
According to media reports, the talks are already well advanced. However, Khedira’s decision has not yet been made. His former teammate Pepe has already been traded for Real’s staff. Mourinho will begin preparations on July 13th. He has a contract with the Spanish runners-up until 2029.

For Khedira, who became soccer world champion with Germany in 2014, the biggest conceivable stage at the European heavyweight would also mean his debut in a coaching staff. In 2021 it became known that Khedira had tried to get a trainer’s license. After his playing career, which lasted until the summer of 2021, he worked as a management consultant at VfB Stuttgart for almost a season. Since then, the Stuttgart native has been working as a TV expert.
