Christo Vet (32) enjoys a successful day at the summer fair in Deventer with a group of friends. Suddenly he sees plumes of smoke coming from his stepdaughter’s caravan. Christo from Apeldoorn doesn’t think twice.

General reporter

Christo and his mates are having a drink after a busy day, when they suddenly see smoke coming from the caravan. “We immediately ran there.”

Empty lot

Vet and his group are up and running. “We then moved the caravan about a hundred meters with about twelve people to an empty plot of land.” This means that the fire cannot spread to the caravans and caravans surrounding it.

When Vet and his buddies take action, the fire is already raging on the inside of the caravan, but not yet on the outside. “That meant we could move it without anyone sustaining burns.”

Did the quick action of Vet and his friends really prevent worse? “That is of course difficult to say afterwards. But that thing really had to get out of there.”

Stepdaughter

Vet’s son runs the Reactor, a wild attraction with rotating gondolas that go up and down. Vet and his wife travel with him. Vet’s stepdaughter is also there, she was the owner of the caravan.

“The caravan was full of her belongings and clothing. There is now nothing left. My wife is going to buy new clothes and we will see what can be arranged with the insurance.”

Vet cannot say how extensive the damage is. “But I am glad that no one was injured.” There was no one in the caravan when the fire broke out.

Technical defect

Vet doesn’t know how the fire broke out, but he does have a suspicion. “There must have been a technical defect somewhere. There are all kinds of equipment in such a caravan, that can always happen. Fortunately, I have never experienced this before, and hopefully this will be the last time.”

The fire has no consequences for the summer fair, which is currently in full swing in the city center. “We just stay there every day and the attraction continues to operate. Because no matter how annoying it all is: the show must go on.”
