Superstar Serena Williams returned to her much-noticed comeback on the tennis tour with a smile and a success.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner from the USA played her doubles at the Queen’s Club in London alongside the young Canadian Victoria Mboko and showed straight away that she has not forgotten how to win around four years after her retirement. With 7:6 (7:2), 6:2, the duo defeated the third-seeded pairing of Nicole Melichar-Martinez (USA) and Erin Routliffe (New Zealand).
“I didn’t have anything better to do. I was tired of sitting at home,” Williams joked about the reason for her comeback. It was a lot of fun competing with Mboko, who is 25 years younger. “It felt so natural playing with Vicky.”
Williams received a wildcard to take part in the London tournament. “The Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” Williams previously explained. “I’ve experienced some of the most significant moments of my career on grass and I’m looking forward to competing again on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
Williams also wants to present himself in Germany
Williams also plans to hit Berlin next week. Both tournaments serve as preparation for the Wimbledon grass classic, which begins at the end of June. It is likely that the former world number one will also play at Church Road, where she triumphed in the singles seven times.
For many, Williams is the best tennis player in history, even if Australian Margaret Court has one more major title to her name. Williams said goodbye to the big tennis stage at the US Open 2022, and almost a year later she had her second child. The 44-year-old led the world rankings for 319 weeks and won a total of 73 titles on the WTA tour. Her sister Venus is still sporadically active on the tennis tour.
