The discussion surrounding bowl signs in the municipality of Dijk en Waard has been going on for some time. It started in The North. After the municipal merger in 2022, Noordenders started a campaign and received the desired recognition in the form of new blue place name signs.

Own identity

And that’s what the Cross wants too. Heerhugowaard is a merger of the former villages: ‘t Zuid-end, ‘t Kruis, De Noord and Veenhuizen. The last two are considered separate villages by the municipality, the other two are called hamlets. That is why the conclusion in 2024 was that ‘t Kruis white place name signs gets.

Yet ‘t Kruis is also regarded by many Heerhugowaard as a separate village centre, with its own identity. “It really is a village,” says entrepreneur Niels Jonker. “The club life is flourishing. We have a nice restaurant and café. We are just a village.”
