The municipality of Noordenveld takes over from the municipality of Aa en Hunze for temporary night shelter for refugees who cannot go to the registration center in Ter Apel.

Fifty asylum seekers slept in the night shelter in Gieten last night. There was no room for these people in the registration center. It was the last night that they could go to the De Goorns sports hall.

From tonight, refugees can go to one of the sports halls of Sports Center De Hullen in Roden. According to the municipality, this is a temporary emergency facility where people can sleep, freshen up and spend the night. Noordenveld will assist for three evenings and nights. From Thursday another solution will have to be found.

Last weekend it was the municipality of Aa en Hunze that came to Ter Apel’s aid. Last month, asylum seekers were also able to spend a night in the sports hall in Gieten.

Last week, the municipality of Borger-Odoorn also helped. Asylum seekers were able to stay in the Hunsowhal in 2e Exloërmond for three nights in a row.

There is no structural solution for the overcrowded registration center yet. The Red Cross, which guides the asylum seekers, “once again strongly calls on the government to resolve the situation that has been going on for almost three weeks as quickly as possible.”

No people slept on the field in front of the registration center last night. Some asylum seekers chose to spend the night in Ter Apel on previous nights, instead of going to a night shelter in another place.
