Maja Chwalinska wrote an impressive tennis fairytale at the French Open 2026, which has also been noticeable in the world rankings since Monday.

Chwalinska is ranked 21st in the updated WTA rankings. The Polish tennis player started the French Open as number 114. One sensational final appearance later, the 24-year-old climbed 93 places. Chwalinska has never been higher in the world tennis rankings.

Having started the French Open as a qualifier, the left-hander prevailed in the main round against Zheng Qinwen (China), Elise Mertens (Belgium), Maria Sakkari (Greece), Diane Parry (France), Anna Nikolajewna Kalinskaja (Russia) and Diana Schnaider (Russia).

“Unforgettable weeks” at the French Open

Only in the final did Chwalinska have to admit defeat 3:6, 2:6 against the Russian Mirra Andreeva.

“I wish you could have seen a better match today, but Mirra was just too good for me, so it’s probably her fault,” Chwalinska joked again in an interview shortly after the match on Saturday.

The Polish tennis sensation spoke of three “three unforgettable weeks” at the French Open. “It was a great time. I will certainly never forget these three weeks. Today’s game was definitely a big challenge. Mirra was clearly the better player today and deserved the win,” summed up Chwalinska.

Tennis star collects millions

The surprising run at the French Open is not only paying off in the tennis world rankings. Chwalinska received 1.4 million euros for reaching the final of the clay court classic.

Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) remains the leader in the WTA rankings. French Open winner Andreeva is sixth (+2). Laura Siegemund is currently the best German tennis player in 44th place (+3).
