Aymen Hussein, striker for the Iraqi national football team, was interrogated for seven hours by US Border Patrol agents on Saturday before being allowed into the country. His telephone was also read. This is reported by the Reuters news agency. The United States, Mexico and Canada will host the World Cup in the coming weeks.

Hussein is an important player for the Iraqi selection. In the qualifications for the World Cup, he scored the winning goal in the play-off match against Bolivia, allowing his country to participate in the final tournament for the first time in forty years.

Hussein was picked out of the line after arriving at the airport in Chicago with his team and staff. The official photographer of the Iraqi selection Talal Salah was also questioned by the American authorities. After ten hours of interrogation, he was ultimately not allowed into the country. The US Border Patrol confirms The Athletic that two people were questioned by the Iraqi delegation and one of them was turned away.

Hussein lost his father and brother in the chaos following the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. After his winning goal against Bolivia, he said: “It was a dream I had cherished since childhood. The feelings of 46 million Iraqis were with me as we achieved that shared dream.”

On June 17, Iraq will play its first match at the World Cup against Norway.
