The Füchse Berlin celebrated a win against Flensburg on the last matchday of the HBL season and are qualified for the Champions League again. World handball player Gidsel excelled, especially in the first half.

  • Füchse Berlin beat Flensburg 43:38
  • The capital city team ended the HBL season in second place
  • World handball player Gidsel excels with 18 goals
  • With 317 goals this season, Gidsel is also the HBL top scorer

At the end of the 2025/26 handball Bundesliga season Foxes Berlin clinched a home win. On Sunday afternoon, coach Nicolej Krickau’s team won 43:38 (22:20) against SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the Max-Schmeling-Halle.

Mathias Gidsel was the best thrower with 18 goals, setting a new personal HBL record.

The Füchse ended the HBL season behind SC Magdeburg as runners-up in second place in the table and are therefore qualified for the Champions League again. Flensburg ends up in third place.

Flensburg starts strong – Gidsel is running hot

The guests got off to a dream start and quickly took a 3-0 lead. It was only after just under three minutes that Mathias Gidsel released the Berliners and reduced the score to 1:3 – it was the 300th goal for the world handball player this HBL season. As a result, Füchse keeper Dejan Milosavljev – in his last Bundesliga game in the Berlin jersey – was able to distinguish himself with a save for the first time. On the other side, Tim Freihöfer scored from seven meters to make it 3:4 (5th).

Afterwards, the SG, which initially appeared almost error-free, gained a five-goal buffer (11:6). After a good 14 minutes of play and with the score 8:13 from the Berliners’ perspective, Füchse coach Krickau took the first timeout of the game. Immediately after this interruption, the home team started a 3-0 run – Gidsel made it 11:13 (16th) with his sixth goal of the day.

The foxes now fought their way little by little – and Gidsel stood out once again. After the first 25 minutes, the Dane had eleven goals to his name with a hit rate of 92 percent – only one missed attempt. Gidsel’s compatriot Lasse Andersson, who will be leaving Berlin after this season, equalized the score at 18:18 in the 26th minute – and scored after just under half an hour to give the Füchse their first lead of the day (21:20). After an extremely entertaining first half, the Berliners were ahead 22:20.

Foxes bring victory to the finish

After the break, Flensburg promptly came back and equalized in the 35th minute with a goal from Emil Jakobsen (24:24). But also because Milosavljev shone again and again with his reflexes, the Foxes took the lead again (26:24). The hosts increased the lead to 30:26 – and so SG coach Aleš Pajovič took a time out after almost 40 minutes.

In the final phase, the guests stayed on the Foxes’ heels, equalized again and again and, above all, kept Gidsel in check much better than in the first half. Two and a half minutes before the end, Flensburg’s Blaž Blagotinšek was shown a red card after a hard foul.

The Berliners ultimately prevailed in this offensive spectacle with 43:38.

Final Four in the Champions League is coming up

Next weekend (June 13th/14th) the Foxes still have a chance of winning the title at the Final Four of the Champions League in Cologne.
