Over the past two nights, twenty refugees had to use emergency shelter in Gieten, because the registration center in Ter Apel was overcrowded.

Asylum seekers have been sheltered in the De Goorns sports hall since Thursday evening, after the temporary emergency shelter in 2e Exloërmond closed its doors earlier in the week. The emergency shelter is necessary because the registration center in Ter Apel cannot handle the influx of asylum seekers. As a result, refugees were in danger of having to sleep outside.

The first night, 31 refugees were received in Gieten. In the following nights, there were 25 and 27 refugees respectively, the Red Cross reports. The shelter in the De Goorns sports hall has room for 150 people.

After each overnight stay, people are returned to the registration center. Two weeks ago, asylum seekers also spent a night in the sports hall in Gieten.
