Olivia Rodrigo reunited with The Cure frontman Robert Smith at Primavera Sound in Barcelona on Saturday – as part of an unannounced set.
A day after the Cure’s headlining performance at the festival, Rodrigo – who wasn’t on the official lineup – announced to her fans via social media that she would be playing at Primavera Sound. Their eleven-track set included all of the major singles as well as the premiere of “What’s Wrong With Me” from the album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
“This song means something special to me for many reasons, but especially because it’s the first time I’ve had a featured guest,” Rodrigo told the audience. “I’m so incredibly proud of it and I’m so glad this song exists – I’m just so fucking excited so I thought I’d let you hear it.”
Although “What’s Wrong With Me” includes a feature, Rodrigo did not initially reveal who the other artist is. The denouement only came after the first chorus, when she announced: “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Robert Smith.”
Smith delivers the second verse
Smith then took over the second verse before the two entered the chorus together.
It’s not the first time the two have appeared on stage together: Smith had already surprised Rodrigo during her headlining performance at Glastonbury 2025 and played “Friday I’m in Love” and “Just Like Heaven” with her. What started on stage has now moved into the studio with “What’s Wrong With Me”.
Collaborating with Smith on “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love” is obvious considering how much Rodrigo has emphasized the Cure’s influence on her new album – from the mention of “Just Like Heaven” in the first single “Drop Dead” to a track called “The Cure”.
Rodrigo on her friendship with Smith
“I have [Smith] “I played a lot of other songs from the album,” Rodrigo said in an interview with Apple Music. “I adore him and have had the opportunity to get to know him a little over the last year.”
Smith himself hinted at a possible collaboration in a British Vogue cover story about Rodrigo. “She calls me quite often to talk about clothes and fashion – and we’ve had a few memorable nights in the studio together,” he said. “I can’t wait to hear what she does next!”
