The checks did cause a surprise for some drivers. “I’m not used to being stopped,” said driver Wim Vancauwenberghe.
Other drivers emphasized that the mentality around drinking and driving has changed. “That used to happen more, but not anymore,” says Guido Storme. “You see people going out for something to eat and a drink at lunchtime, but I can blow my mind here with confidence.”
Monique Vandekerckhove also thinks the checks are necessary. “I really try to avoid alcohol behind the wheel. You may still be within your rights, but when you have had a drink the problems really start,” she says. “I want them to do more of those checks.”
The control action in Wingene ultimately did not result in a single positive alcohol test.
