The incident took place during the morning rush hour at the 36th Street Subway Station, in the Sunset Park neighborhood. Aid workers and employees of the Bureau for Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives have now arrived on the scene.

The fire service reports that 13 people have been taken to hospital, including several with gunshot wounds. News channel CNN previously learned from a police source that five people had been shot. At least one injured person is said to be in critical condition.

Police are looking for a man wearing a gas mask and orange construction vest. In addition to shots, the perpetrator also allegedly set off a smoke bomb. The fire service initially reported that they had found “several unexploded devices” in the subway station. According to the police, there are no longer any active explosives present.

The 36th Street subway station has three subway lines. New York’s public transit service reports “major schedule disruption” and “major delays” on at least six subway lines.
