The VB athletes cheer loudly when Petra Witting tells them that in two years the Special Olympics will come to ‘their’ Drenthe. The VB group consists of athletes with an intellectual disability. Although we still have to train hard for the next edition, the news is received with enthusiasm.
“It is very special for them to be able to experience something like this, I can really enjoy that they receive such a gift,” says Witting. Her son is a VB athlete himself and together they have traveled across the country for the Special Olympics. Two years ago she thought it was time for Drenthe to organize the event.
“When I visit myself, I invite people again. I have been to so many provinces. It would be nice if they could also come to Drenthe and see how beautiful and sporty Drenthe is,” Witting said two years ago.
Then the ball started rolling. Drenthe politicians unanimously voted in favor of investigating the possibilities and earlier this year the province, together with all municipalities and SportDrenthe, offered their bid book.
With success, it now appears. The national event will be brought to our province in 2028. “Completely crazy,” says Witting. Several athletes are also very happy with it.
“I really enjoy traveling. But to be able to do this in your own environment in two years’ time is very exciting but also very nice,” says VB athlete Joyce Unij. Henri Garming: “Finally to Drenthe, finally.” “I completely agree,” adds Daan Pastoor.
