American expert Michiel Vos always brags that he is used to royal palaces, the White House and the houses of rock stars, but things went wrong for Ruud de Wild. “Bam! He went through it.”

Michiel Vos is a man who knows how things should be done. His mother-in-law is Nancy Pelosi, he moves in the highest political and cultural circles, and always proudly talks about how he has sat at the kitchen table with presidents, kings and rock stars. You expect someone with such references to behave correctly in every home.

Excited

And yet it was Michiel Vos who caused havoc in Ruud de Wild’s home last weekend. “I really had a traumatic weekend,” says the DJ NPO Radio 2. “I’m really touched. On Friday evening Michiel Vos came to eat with me and I have a few of those very nice tables.”

Those glass-blown tables, Ruud explains. “Orange brown, really beautiful things. It takes three or four months before you finally have those things. I had them made. Beautiful, I am very careful with them. And Michiel now half lives with me. He has been in the Netherlands for far too long. I had very good, honest cooking. He likes that.”

Footstool

Michiel likes steak. “So I bought an ecological steak. I had cooked a really nice meal and at one point he went to relax on the chair after that delicious meal. I have a few chairs by the fireplace. At one point he thought about one of those tables: oh, that’s a nice footstool. And bám, through it!”

He continues: “I thought: huh? What a glass shattering! Is a stone going through the window? My daughter and I were really watching. Within fifteen minutes we were standing in a kind of freeze. I see it that way and I really kept watching for fifteen minutes and so did Teddy.”

3 millimeters

How was Michiel? “He took out his foot. It is of course 3 millimeters thick. It is an art object. This man comes home to big rock stars, to the king, to Donald Trump, to all those other presidents and his mother-in-law is also no stranger to the world where you know how to do it.”

He continues: “So we all thought: Michiel, of everyone we could have named and done this, with his feet on a table, you are the very last one I could have thought of.”

Did Michiel hurt himself? No, says Ruud. “There was nothing wrong.”
