The threatening letter stated, among other things, that ‘they also managed to find her son’. Whether there is a connection between the letter and the attack is being investigated.

The incident happened last night around 7 p.m. under a tunnel on the Parnassusweg. The son was on his bicycle home from the city when a man on a scooter approached him. The perpetrator had a heavy chain lock in his hand and, according to Candan, lashed out at the boy’s upper body while driving. He was injured as a result.

The police have shared a description of the suspect: he is said to be between 30 and 40 years old, with a stocky build and a light complexion. He is also said to have been riding a black scooter and wearing a black helmet. After the attack, he is said to have driven towards the center of the city.

Column about football match

Het Parool published on May 15 a column van Candan about how an Amsterdam amateur football match between AFC and De Dijk got out of hand after a female referee awarded a penalty to AFC. According to Candan, the verbal attack towards the referee had to do with the fact that she is a woman.

“And yes, it hurts to mention this, but the opponent was a multicultural team. That in itself says nothing about norms or behavior,” she writes in the column. “That is precisely why it is so tragic when a group of boys behave this way towards a female referee, because in doing so they confirm exactly the prejudices and stigmas that bicultural young people have been fighting against for years.”

Shortly after publication of the column, the editors of Het Parool received a threatening letter addressed to Candan. “We know where to find Yesin, just look behind you just like your son of a whore,” the letter states.
