The Dutch champion of FdJ-Suez, the highest paid in the women’s movement with 1 million euros a year, had not yet celebrated in the women’s pink race, she who in her career won the 2023 Tour and two Vueltas (2024 and 2025), plus Flanders, Amstel, 2 Freccia Wallone, 3 Liège, 2 Strade Bianche. Today she won the fifth stage, Longarone-Santo Stefano di Cadore, 146 km, a Dolomite stage with a difference in altitude of 3400 metres. In the four-man sprint, she clearly beat her compatriot Anna Van der Breggen in the pink jersey and the German Antonia Niedermaier; Canadian Holmgren is 2″ behind. Italian Elisa Longo Borghini is fifth at 15″.

It was a very tough day, with the selection happening earlier than expected. Luckily I had Lauren Dickson with me, who kept the pace high before my sprint. Now we must avoid risks in the next two stages, before the big stage on Saturday”. The Giro Women continues tomorrow with the sixth stage, Ala-Brescello, 160 km, for sprinters. The race will experience its strong moment on Saturday with the arrival at an altitude of 2034 meters in Sestriere after climbing the terrible Colle delle Finestre with its eight kilometers of dirt road: the ranking will be decided right here.
