Ajax Amsterdam has agreed with coach Míchel on a commitment for the coming season. The 50-year-old Spaniard has been coaching Spanish first division club FC Girona for five years and has a two-year contract with Ajax. Míchel succeeds Óscar García, who was supposed to save the season and had previously been hired as the new coach for Ajax II. In the end we only finished fifth.

Míchel achieved LaLiga promotion in his first year with Girona and finished sensationally third in the 2023/24 season, which resulted in his first participation in the Champions League. The club and coach recently announced their separation after relegation could no longer be avoided. In 221 games under Míchel, Girona scored an average of 1.45 points.

Jordi Cruijff, Technical Director at Ajax, said: “Míchel is an ambitious and demanding coach. I am convinced that he will transfer his vision and his intensive way of working to our squad. I know him well and have been following his work for years. His way of working suits Ajax. The fact that he spent five seasons with the same club in LaLiga says a lot about his qualities and his loyalty. Now that this important position has been filled, we can continue to work on improving the squad.”
