Since its opening in 1999, the Valkhof Museum in Nijmegen has been the subject of fierce debate. Architecture enthusiasts praise it as modern and daring, colloquially deriding it as an ‘aquarium’ or ‘swimming pool’. Queen Máxima will reopen the much-discussed building next Thursday, June 4, after a multi-million dollar renovation. A second chance for a project that has been controversial from the start in the oldest city in the Netherlands.
