The exact cause of the mass death is not yet known. According to ILVO, bycatch by fishing remains the most likely explanation for the time being. The animals previously showed no obvious injuries or bite marks.
“We still suspect bycatch,” says Desmidt. “Pregnant females come closer to the coast to have their young and are therefore more vulnerable to fishermen active in that area. But we are also exploring other avenues to be sure.”
