At the beginning of May, Patrick Wimmer was last on the pitch for Lower Saxony in VfL Wolfsburg’s 0-1 home defeat against Bayern Munich. There are increasing signs that it was the Austrian’s last game in a VfL jersey after four years. Although Bundesliga relegated teams are still trying to retain the offensive power they have tied up until 2027, the number of interested parties is large. As the “Bild” newspaper reported on Sunday, Eintracht Frankfurt has also entered the race for Wimmer.

Update: In the afternoon, “Sky” reported on another interested party in Wimmer: TSG Hoffenheim should hold concrete discussions about a commitment with the players. The people of Kraichgau are optimistic. The TV station puts the exit clause, which should enable Wimmer to leave Wolfsburg after relegation, at 10 million euros. When Wimmer moved to VfL, this was still above the market value at the time of 8 million euros. Wimmer’s valuation is now at 12 million euros.

Wimmer did not play for VfL in the Bundesliga relegation due to injury and was unable to prevent Lower Saxony from being relegated. The 30-time national player had seven scorers from 25 league appearances in 2025/26. However, Wimmer was set back several times by injuries and only played three games over the full 90 minutes over the course of the season. His market value had fallen to 12 million euros in the latest Bundesliga update.

According to the report, Frankfurt is now said to have put out feelers to the Wolfsburg player. The Hessians announced a new coach on Sunday: Adi Hütter is starting his second term in office on the Main. With Hütter, Wimmer’s compatriot takes over the helm at the SGE, and the two are said to have a good relationship.

It remains to be seen whether Eintracht will be serious about courting the professional and whether Wimmer could become the first entry under Hütter. In any case, the competition is likely to be fierce; Wimmer has long been linked with a move to England. In particular, the Brighton & Hove Albion club, managed by German coach Fabian Hürzeler, is said to have an eye on him; the Seagulls will play internationally in 2026/27.

However, it is likely that a decision regarding Wimmer’s future will only be made after the World Cup – the 25-year-old is part of Austria’s coach Ralf Rangnick’s squad and can further promote himself with good performances at the tournament.
