Paris Saint-Germain’s defense of the title not only leads to positive scenes in the French capital. A police officer is injured during riots. The extent of the damage is even greater.
There were clashes between police and football fans in Paris during the Champions League final. Before the end of the final between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal FC, which took place in Budapest, the police checked 2,216 people and fined 89. According to the prefecture late Saturday evening, 45 people were taken into custody throughout the metropolitan area. A police officer was also injured.
A bus stop near the Champs-Élysées was destroyed. A bakery and a restaurant near the Parc des Princes were also damaged. Projectiles are said to have been thrown at police officers. According to the AFP news agency, the emergency services responded with tear gas after fireworks were thrown at them.
8,000 police officers in Paris
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said there was a “very robust, very solid security concept” to curb violence. “Our job is to guarantee everyone a festive celebration that is calm and completely safe,” said a police spokesman.
Around 22,000 police officers were deployed across the country, including 8,000 in Paris, after PSG’s triumph in the premier league last year was accompanied by unrest on the streets.
