Apple Shifts Strategy: Bidding Farewell to M6 Pro and Max Chips
The M6 Chip Variants are No More
Apple is redefining its semiconductor strategy, opting to eliminate the powerful “Pro” and “Max” variants of the upcoming M6 chip. Instead of launching these versions, the tech giant plans to leap directly into the M7 generation, which is set to be specifically geared towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications.
The standard M6 chip, known by its codename “Komodo,” is still on track for release in 2026 and will be featured in devices like the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iMac, and iPad. With an impressive memory bandwidth of around 200 GB/s, up to 12 GPU cores, and a significantly enhanced Neural Engine, this chip aims to be a robust all-rounder. M7 Generation: The AI Accelerator
The focus of the M7 series is squarely on Artificial Intelligence. Apple’s engineers are prioritizing specialized AI accelerators. The base M7 chip is expected to debut in the first half of 2027, boasting approximately 240 GB/s of memory bandwidth. More powerful versions, including the M7 Pro and M7 Max, will follow in the latter half of 2027, while the top-of-the-line M7 Ultra is slated for 2028.
Mac Studio 2026: The M5 Ultra Transition
In the interim, Apple will introduce a transitional solution with the M5 Ultra for the Mac Studio in 2026. This update promises outstanding specifications: up to 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, and a whopping 768 GB of RAM.
