The dramatic accident took place in the morning in the town of Dinslaken. The two fatalities are 12-year-old boys. They succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

The 47-year-old driver of the car was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The woman is said to have lost control of the steering wheel for an unknown reason and hit the children. She then swung into three parked cars, a police spokesperson said.

An investigation has been opened into the accident. This took place in a busy area near a school, so there were many eyewitnesses.
