In 1989 I was in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and went to a Sonny Rollins concert. One jazz track after another rolled out of the saxophone across the packed hall. Until I suddenly heard a piece of which I recognized every note: ‘tadaduda tadadudadudadudaduda tatadatataa’. No one in the crowded room perked up. No applause of recognition. Foreign. A little later I understood why I was the only one who could hum that piece note by note: ‘The Duke of Iron’ is the opening melody of Keek op de Week.
