RRome, May 26th. (askanews) – It is set in Kabul in 2021, shortly before the return of the Taliban after 20 years of American presence, No good men by director Shahrbanoo Sadat, in Italian cinemas from May 28th. A comedy that not only aims to denounce the violent patriarchy in Afghan society but also to show, through a romantic story, the true face of Kabul women.
Sadat, who now lives in Germany, plays Naru, a TV operator in the film Kabul News. «At that moment there were opportunitiesI am a product of those twenty years: I studied English, I had a job, I became a director, but However, ours is a profoundly patriarchal societywith many limitations for women. In the film I wanted to tell the story of one of them, who works and at the same time tries to fight the system. And I wanted to do it through a romantic comedy, which had actually never been done before in Afghanistan, and this was also a complex challenge for me.”
For the director it was important show various facets of Afghan societyof its women and of those men who also today they try to escape patriarchal logic, the “good men”: «Many think that all women in Afghanistan are repressed, silent but this is a cliché: even if in the last 5 years they can no longer go to school or work, it doesn’t mean that they stay at home. I know lots of women who take English courses or play sports in secret: Even if freedoms are limited they will not stop. And in the same way we never talk about the “good men” and how difficult life is for them there: they are bullied, harassed. But we also need menwithout them even women’s movements cannot create a society based on respect for others.”
