For six players from France’s national coach Didier Deschamps’ 26-man squad, the highlight of the season in club football is coming up before the World Cup: Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, Warren Zaire-Emery, Lucas Hernández (all Paris Saint-Germain) and William Saliba (Arsenal FC) have the potential to be on the pitch in the Champions League final.
For podcast host Anne Hilt, one of the reasons why France could celebrate their third World Cup title this year: “They definitely have the best squad in Europe.” In addition, in her opinion, the departure of national coach Deschamps after the tournament could play a role.
France is also a “safe bet” for podcast host Jens Walbrodt. However, he also sees potential in the Spanish squad: “I think the midfield is outstanding and crucial for the football that Spain played, at least at the last European Championship.”
Both teams still have two test matches left before they head to the World Cup. There Spain will face Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in the group phase. France will face Sénégal, Iraq and Norway – and possibly Germany in the round of 16.
