Although he is already 39 years old, Kasper Schmeichel would have liked to continue playing. But his surgeons had bad news for the Danish goalkeeper.

Kasper Schmeichel has to end his career earlier than planned. The long-time Danish national goalkeeper is retiring due to a serious shoulder injury.

“When my contract with Celtic expires in June, I will end my career as a professional footballer,” said the 39-year-old on Danish television TV2.

Schmeichel, who has played for Glasgow since the summer of 2024, sustained the injury in the Europa League playoffs against VfB Stuttgart in February. The former Leicester keeper underwent surgery in March, but a return to top level remains out of the question.

Schmeichel: “Everything comes to an end”

“The decision was made for me. Several surgeons who specialize in the problems with my shoulder have told me that I should not expect to be able to play at the highest level again,” said Schmeichel. He also explained: “It’s definitely not the way I would have liked to end my career. But everything comes to an end.”

Schmeichel played 120 international matches for Denmark, putting him in fourth place on his country’s all-time best list.

The son of goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel celebrated his greatest success with Leicester City. In 2016 the club surprisingly won the English championship. Five years later, Leicester also won the FA Cup.
