The last day of the 2025-26 championship is under observation: Alfonsi, in his complaint, denounces what he thinks are suspicious changes in the designations of the referee observers, the figures who for the Hague assign votes to the performances of the match directors (votes that determine the confirmation or dismissal of the whistles at the end of the season)

English version

A new refereeing scandal risks upsetting the Italian Referees Association and its (new) appointee, Dino Tommasi. The president of the Aia section of L’Aquila, Guido Alfonsi, sent a complaint to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office and to the public prosecutor Maurizio Ascione, head of the investigation at the Milan Prosecutor’s Office which includes the former designator Gianluca Rocchi among the suspects. Alfonsi highlights anomalies in the dismissal of referee Federico Dionisi, from the L’Aquila section, from CAN AB roles. There has already been a first consequence: the FIGC Prosecutor’s Office has opened a file to verify what was declared. All this while the FIGC, thanks to the negative opinion of the consultative section of the Sports Guarantee Board at CONI, gave up on the idea of a commissioner.

what happened

The last day of the 2025-26 championship, played a few days ago, is under observation. Alfonsi reconstructs a change in the designation of the referee observer, the figure who assigns grades to the referees’ performances for The Hague. Votes which will then determine a performance ranking, with consequent confirmation or dismissal of the whistles at the end of the season. Alfonsi points out that scout Andrea Antonelli was initially designated for Lazio-Pisa, then sent to Napoli-Udinese, while Sandro Rossomando was sent to the Olimpico, initially destined for Maradona. A suspicious reversal for him. Rossomando rated Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, the referee of Lazio-Pisa, with 8.40, an insufficient score which took Ferrieri Caputi out of the top 20 positions in the seasonal rankings. This downgrading, according to the complaint, would have led to the dismissal of Dionisi. Also under observation is the confirmation of the referee Andrea Rapuano, due precisely to the loss of positions of Ferrieri Caputi.

what the complaint says

Alfonsi uses strong words in the complaint: “The methods of Dionisi’s disposals leave, to say the least, perplexed by the ways in which they apparently appear to have been planned. The rating of 8.40 (to Ferrieri Caputi, ed.) is the only one that would certainly have led to the dismissal of Federico Dionisi, indirect victim of this unspeakable plan. All the associates witnessed what I could define as, without the possibility of denied, the ‘consummation of an irrefutable injustice’”. And again: “It is undeniable that the rating of 8.40 assigned to the referee Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi certainly appears to have been induced from above, given his direction of the match, free from errors.”

Dionysis and Rapuanus

The Hague must dismiss five referees. At the moment, Rapuano is twentieth in the ranking and therefore safe. However, if Ferrieri Caputi’s vote were changed, Rapuano, having more than ten years of seniority, would be dismissed. And this, in chain, would lead to the confirmation of Dionysi. Why? Because, in addition to the three referees not ranked in terms of seniority and Massimi (last in the rankings), Rapuano himself would be out. And Dionysus, although second to last, would be safe.

what happens now

The federal prosecutor Chinè has already decided to interview all interested parties and acquire the relevant documentation, to understand whether there are grounds for proceeding with a referral, which could involve Dino Tommasi, the interim designator who replaced Rocchi. The timing of the investigation? Sixty days, with a possible extension of 40. A hot summer.
