Right-back Joe Scally, recently named to the United States’ World Cup team, could leave Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer. According to information from the “Bild” newspaper, the US international is considering an early departure from the Lower Rhine despite his contract running until 2027. The 23-year-old has been one of the Foals’ most consistent performers for years; he has always played at least 30 games in four of the last five Bundesliga seasons.
Scally has been under contract with Borussia since January 2021. The American moved from New York City FC to the Lower Rhine for a fee of 1.8 million euros and quickly became a fixture in Gladbach. To date, there have been a total of 167 competitive games (14 scorers). In April 2023, Borussia extended the full-back’s contract early until 2027.
Scally had recently spoken openly about his future. The US international has been at Borussia for a long time and loves the club, he explained in a media round, but at the same time it is no secret that he would like to experience something different at some point in his career. The 23-year-old only wants to make a decision about his next step after the World Cup. Scally’s first focus is on the home tournament with the US selection.
In the past season, the 24-time national player made 32 Bundesliga appearances, in which he was in the starting line-up 29 times and contributed two goals and three assists for coach Eugen Polanski’s team. In the 0-0 draw in Wolfsburg at the end of April, Scally played his 150th Bundesliga game and immortalized himself in the league’s history books as the youngest non-German to break this mark (for statistics: foreigners with the most Bundesliga appearances).
A possible departure would present Gladbach with an important personnel decision on the right side of defense. In addition to his regular position at right back, Scally can also be used on the left side or in a three-man chain. For Borussia, a sale this summer would also be the last major opportunity to achieve a market-based transfer fee for a player with a contract until 2027.
Scally’s market value is currently €7 million. A strong World Cup could further stimulate Scally’s market – and improve Gladbach’s starting position in possible negotiations.
