Eintracht Frankfurt’s captain Laura Freigang is actually an integral part of the DFB women. But she will be missing from the upcoming international matches. The reason for this has to do with their role in the system.
Laura Freigang is not part of the DFB women’s permanent squad for the last two World Cup qualifying games. National coach Christian Wück only nominated the 28-year-old when called upon.
At the press conference, Wück cited the short playing time as the reason: “If you take a closer look, you can see that she has only had very little playing time with us since the European Championships.” Freigang has experience, “but at the moment we can’t use it in a way that helps us on the pitch.” Wück pointed to Jule Brand, Linda Dallmann and the newly appointed Larissa Mühlhaus as competition in the attacking midfield.
Wück said he had a “sensible” conversation with Freigang and that she took the decision professionally. It’s not a final rejection: “She’s on call, the window isn’t closed either, I want to emphasize that again.” If she performs well in the new season, she could be invited back.
As league leaders, the DFB women will host their pursuers Norway in Cologne on June 5th (from 8:35 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). A win would mean Brazil’s ticket to the 2027 World Cup. The game in Ljubljana against Slovenia follows on June 9th (from 6 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online).
