With his fourth stage win, Jonas Vingegaard extended his lead in the Giro d’Italia. The big favorite from Denmark prevailed on the 16th stage ahead of the Austrian Felix Gall. At the mountain finish in Cari, Switzerland, the Australian Jai Hindley came third. Vingegaard made the decisive attack shortly before half of the almost twelve kilometer long final climb.

In the overall standings, Vingegaard is already 4:03 minutes ahead of the new runner-up Gall. Third is Thymen Arensman, who finished fourth on the Cari stage. The Dutchman is 4:27 minutes behind Vingegaard.

Ackermann gets out

On Wednesday we go back to Italy. After 202 kilometers, the professionals reach Andalo in the province of Trento. The profile is significantly less demanding, which is why outliers have chances. In the end, a fast-paced climber could win.

For Pascal Ackermann, however, the Giro is over. The sprinter did not take part in the 16th stage. The former German champion was plagued by stomach problems. Ackermann would probably only have had a chance of winning on the final stage in Rome anyway.
