On the last matchday, AC Milan missed out on qualifying for the Champions League. Now the club is completely repositioning itself.

After missing out on a place in the Champions League, the traditional Italian club AC Milan struck a blow and fired almost the entire management team as well as coach Massimiliano Allegri. As the club from Lombardy announced on Monday, in addition to the coach, managing director Giorgio Furlani (47), sports director Igli Tare (52) and technical director Geoffrey Moncada (39) were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Club advisor Zlatan Ibrahimović (44) is allowed to stay.

On the last matchday of Serie A, Milan had lost the premier class qualification they had already believed to be certain by losing 2-1 to Cagliari Calcio. For the team led by Sturm loanee Niclas Füllkrug, a draw would have been enough for the Champions League, which the Milanese are now missing for the second time in a row. Instead, they qualified for the Europa League in fifth place.

Premier class as a minimum goal

Allegri, who returned to Milan in May 2025 after a first spell in office from 2010 to 2014, had repeatedly emphasized throughout the season that qualification for the premier class was the minimum goal. In that case, the 58-year-old coach’s contract would have been automatically extended by one year. “I’m disappointed and angry. We didn’t expect to miss the Champions League,” Allegri said on Sunday after the final whistle.

For most of the season, AC even had realistic chances of winning the Scudetto. “However, the final phase was completely inconsistent compared to previous performances, and yesterday’s disappointing defeat in the last game sealed the final failure of the season. It is now time for changes and a comprehensive reorganization of football operations,” the club wrote in its statement. Successors will be announced “in due course”.
