Marc-André ter Stegen experienced the first relegation of his professional career with FC Girona. What this means for his future is still completely unclear.

On the last matchday of the Spanish La Liga, FC Girona missed out on relegation with a 1-1 draw against FC Elche on Saturday evening and was relegated. For German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen it is the first relegation of his professional career – and his future is unclear.

The 34-year-old moved to Girona on loan in the winter to gain match practice for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. After two missions in January, he suffered a muscle injury in his thigh and had to undergo another operation. He watched the draw on Saturday passively.

ter Stegen is still unwelcome in Barcelona

The 44-time national player still has a contract with FC Barcelona until 2028. According to “Mundo Deportivo”, coach Hansi Flick no longer plans to work with him. The newspaper has already described Ter Stegen as a “hot potato” for Barcelona. It was said in the club that it would not be easy to find a buyer for Ter Stegen.

Even before the loan, Ter Stegen had hardly played. A back injury kept him out for almost the entire first half of the season. Before that, a patellar tendon rupture had put him out of action for over six months. This meant that his hopes of participating in the World Cup were dashed. The tournament will take place from June 11th to July 19th.
