Martin drives out of his friend’s shed with the exhaust pipe roaring. It is an orange FIAT 4300 DT from 1972. “It is really a favorite of mine, a dream tractor actually. When I was a little boy, we had a small Fiat and it was driving around at a contracting company in the area. I would stand there looking at it: ‘Wow, what a thing’.”
Martin competes in about fifteen races per season. “It’s my biggest hobby and I think it’s incredibly beautiful.” He has not forgotten the bitter pill of the cancellation of Power Valley, but he is looking forward to the other trekking event this Pentecost weekend: Trekkertrek in Middenmeer.
He had actually lent his tractor to someone else for the Trekkertrek in Middenmeer on Whit Monday, because at that time he would help clean up the mess at Power Valley. “But yes, now I’m going to take a hike,” he says with a big grin.
There are roaring engines in Middenmeer
“Breeding owls? Well, fortunately they are not with us,” says Casper van Woerkom of the Agricultural Youth Wieringermeer, which organizes the Trekkertrek. “We are far away from a nature reserve or something like that.”
