The police have taken activists from the action group Extinction Rebellion (XR) off the trail in Utrecht. This is reported by the ANP news agency. About twenty demonstrators entered two places on the track near Utrecht Central Station around 1:15 p.m. This brought train traffic around Utrecht to a standstill.
The demonstrators demand attention for the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and want the Netherlands to impose a “full economic embargo” against Israel, according to XR on social media.
The rail blockade was banned on Friday by the local triangle of mayor, police and Public Prosecution Service. According to ANP, the police were already present at the station in large numbers. It is not known when train traffic will fully resume.
