Max Eberl’s contract as FC Bayern’s sports director only runs until 2027. It is unclear whether it will be extended.

Uli Hoeneß commented on the work of sports director Max Eberl at FC Bayern Munich and was both praiseworthy and reserved. The honorary president told “Spiegel” that there was a tendency of “60 to 40 for an extension” of Eberl’s contract. At the same time, Hoeneß admitted: “There are still doubts.”

Eberl himself recently seemed optimistic about a possible contract extension. “It wasn’t easy at the beginning. But now we have achieved very, very good things,” explained the 52-year-old. “People should evaluate my job. And if they like my job, then I’m willing to stay at Bayern longer.”

Hoeneß praised Eberl as “a manager who has played a large part in our success this season.” However, a possible contract extension cannot be negotiated until July 1st at the earliest, as board members can only talk about an extension a year before the end of the contract, according to the supervisory board member. In addition to Eberl, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and Rouven Kasper, who has been responsible for marketing and sales since the beginning of the year, run the club.

“Don’t want to go into details now”

The supervisory board meeting in August will then decide whether Eberl is the right manager for the future of FC Bayern in the long term.

Hoeneß emphasized that he did not want to interfere any further in the discussion: “I don’t want to go into details now, I’ll leave that to our discussion in the supervisory board.” Eberl has been the sports director in Munich since spring 2024.
