In Sussex, UK, a customer was surprised to find a GPS transmitter in a pack of sausages at Co-Op, a local supermarket. The transmitters could track the products as they leave the store. The sausages were also in a sealed plastic box. The supermarket wants to prevent shoplifting.
Several British supermarkets have taken measures to combat theft. For example, they deploy security officers with body cameras and better surveillance cameras. A Co-op spokesperson told Sky News that this crime trend could be reversed. “Local stores are anchored in communities and we continue to invest in a variety of safety and surveillance measures.” According to Co-op, the measures are working. Last year, 205% fewer crimes were reported at the chain.
