In honor of its twentieth anniversary, popular streaming giant Spotify launched a new flashy disco ball icon. But what was intended as a festive gesture unexpectedly provoked strong reactions.
With ‘Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s)’, the streaming app said it wanted to offer a “playful and nostalgic look back at music history”. For example, a new Wrapped feature allows users to track their entire musical history on the app from start to finish.
This important milestone also included a new festive logo. Without any announcement, Spotify introduced the green disco ball icon last week. But that icon quickly received a flood of criticism. According to one user on X, it was “the biggest decline in history.”
“The person who designed this logo should be fired,” another disgruntled user commented. Spotify acknowledged the negative reactions and clarified that it is only a temporary design to celebrate its anniversary. “We understand that glitter is not for everyone. Our temporary glow-up will end next week.”
Parody trend
Yet the controversy also ends on a happy note. Ever since Spotify ditched its iconic green circle for a disco ball, companies across industries have been coming up with their own knock-off designs for glittery logos. From Delhaize to De Lijn: various brands were also interested in such a makeover.
