Spotify swapped its app icon for a glittering disco ball – and received ridicule from users and brands like KitKat. Now the end of the makeover has been officially confirmed.
Spotify shines with a new logo. On May 14th, a new cover of the streaming app appeared on the cell phones of many music listeners.
This is the first time the application has changed its appearance in over 10 years. The music provider didn’t really say much about the new look. On X they posted: “Isn’t she adorable? 💚”
Instead of the minimalist green circle with black sound waves, a glittering, three-dimensional disco ball is now emblazoned on the screens of many cell phones. And how is that received?
Users are dissatisfied
Spotify users are not happy with the new design. “The new Spotify logo ruined my day,” one person said on TikTok. Particularly annoying: The new logo looks as if the app is currently updating. Because the green tone of the new disco ball is darker than in the original layout. This makes it confusing for many people when they want to open the app.
Other brands have also quickly made fun of the app’s new look. KitKat, Notion, Solana and many others shared fake logos in the same disco ball style.
Background: Spotify’s 20th anniversary
The streaming service chose the new look for a reason. Spotify is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. For the birthday they also released other new features within the music app. So there is now Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s). There, users can track their streaming history: the total number of songs listened to, the first songs they heard, and the most streamed artists. There is also an adapted playlist with the 120 most played tracks.
Temporary makeover confirmed
Many people are wondering whether the new logo is a temporary edition. At first Spotify did not speak up. It is not unusual that users are usually not fans of new logos. The streaming service probably didn’t expect such a reaction. When Instagram changed its logo in 2016, many people liked the old design much better. Nevertheless, users were able to get used to the new logo and the old one is all but forgotten.
Spotify will soon be back in the familiar design. After all the backlash on social media, they now have this statement on X: “Okay, we know glitter isn’t for everyone. Our temporary glitter makeover is ending soon. Next week the usual Spotify icon returns.”
