The Foo Fighters returned to The Late Show on Wednesday night, performing a high-energy medley of the very first and very last songs they ever performed on stage at the iconic show – a real circle that came full circle.
“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert recalled that the band made their first ever TV appearance with “This Is a Call” in 1995 – then under host David Letterman. They had also been Letterman’s very last musical guest and performed Letterman’s favorite song, “Everlong,” before he handed over the reins to Colbert in 2015.
Letterman had once performed “Everlong” during his five-week recovery from quintuple bypass surgery in 2000 – and the band had “dropped everything” to play the anthem for Letterman’s comeback show.
Grohl’s words on Letterman
“When we found out that [Letterman] “The fact that he really liked our music, that he was actually a fan, really blew me away,” Grohl once told ROLLING STONE. “When he came back from his heart surgery, they asked us to play our song ‘Everlong’ because that was his favorite song… I think we even canceled a tour. We just felt like we had to be there. It wasn’t just an honor to be asked – it felt like something we had to do because he’s always meant so much to us. And that’s where this connection came from that we had for years. That’s pretty damn cool, you know?”
The Foo Fighters’ appearance on Wednesday may have been their last at the late-night institution: Colbert will end his decade-long tenure as host later this month after CBS canceled the show last year. The last show is Thursday May 21st.
The Foo Fighters released their album “Your Favorite Toy” in April and had a busy week. They paid a visit to NPR’s Tiny Desk, where frontman Dave Grohl said it was an “honor” to be allowed into the space. “I’ve seen so many of these tiny desk shows and I have a few favorites,” Grohl said. “I have to say, when I saw Trouble Funk crammed into this tiny little office space, I thought, ‘It’s not that tiny.’ … But it’s great to be here.”
Tour through Europe and the USA
The band plays BottleRock Napa Valley later this month before heading to Europe for their Take Cover Tour. They return to the States in August and stop in Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, Nashville and Los Angeles, among others.
