Somehow, the NPR Tiny Desk actually managed to fit all six Foo Fighters in one office. The band played a five-song set of hits – opening with “Spit Shine,” the new single from the album “Your Favorite Toy.”
“I have to say, when I saw Trouble Funk squeezing into this little office space, I thought, ‘It’s not that small.’ … But it’s great to be here.”
The band, which is usually at home on spacious stadium stages, didn’t seem to mind the crowded atmosphere in the slightest: frontman Dave Grohl leaned into the microphone and growled “You know I don’t really give a damn” before the band started with melodic backing vocals. After the song, everyone grinned with satisfaction, and Grohl joked that the microphone was “the most difficult instrument of all.”
Then, just before “Learn to Fly,” Grohl explained to the office audience what the performance meant to him. “It’s an honor to be here,” he said. “I’ve seen so many of these tiny desk shows and I have a bunch of favorites. I have to say, when I saw Trouble Funk squeezing into this little office space, I thought, ‘It’s not that small.’ … But it’s great to be here.”
The rest of the set included “Child Actor” from Your Favorite Toy as well as two of the band’s most timeless songs: “My Hero” and “Everlong” from 1997’s The Color and the Shape. At the end, Grohl leaned into the microphone again and said, “Thank you, that was a lot of fun” – whereupon the assembled NPR employees cheered and applauded.
Next appearances in North America
Aside from an appearance at BottleRock Napa Valley, the next opportunity for North American fans is the start of a nearly two-month tour in August – kicking off at Toronto’s Rogers Stadium.
