Dumped garden waste, nails in trees and scooters driving straight through nature. In the Markiezenhofbosje in Roden, all kinds of things happen that are unacceptable. It is a thorn in the side of resident André Brasse.

“I sometimes see people from the neighborhood walking in with containers that they throw out here,” says André, who lives right next to the piece of forest. “I don’t think it is malicious at all, but sometimes it is ignorance.”

The piece of forest, which local residents call the Markiezenhofbosje, is a popular piece of greenery in the Roden West district. Many birds sing and it is a nice play area for children. But a lot of (garden) waste and soil is also dumped.

Ironically, recently also right behind the sign saying ‘No dumping of (green) waste’. The sign was placed a few years ago by the municipality of Noordenveld. André: “That’s really rowdy. Then I think: do you really have a plate in front of your head?”

According to De Rodenaar, these dumpings change the composition of the forest. Other plants are now growing such as hyacinths and snowdrops, which actually come from gardens. “I think that’s a shame. Fertilizers are also being added to the soil, which means you get more and more blackberries and nettles.”

He also regularly finds nails in trees and more and more paths are being created in the forest. Where scooters also speed over. André states that the number of animals that find the forest a nice place has declined in recent years.
