Almost a year after The Who completed their North American Farewell Tour, frontman Roger Daltrey is embarking on a solo tour – with more dates than he last played with the band. The concert series, which opens in Arizona in August is called “A Great Night Out.”
“Well, another one for the road,” Daltrey tells Rolling Stone. “After the Who’s last US tour, it’s time for me to possibly do the same as a solo artist. After 17 years of solo touring with a variety of musicians, a quieter life is becoming more and more tempting – let’s see.”
“With my current lineup of nine musicians, I now have the opportunity to see your beautiful country and enjoy the hospitality you have shown me for so many years,” he continues. “I will play without backing tracks and always look for new soundscapes to present the songs. This is great fun and gives me the chance to have a great evening.”
Tickets and VIP packages
Tickets for the tour go on general sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster. Presales – including one with the password GREATNIGHT – start on Wednesday at the same time, local presales follow on Thursday. Daltrey also offers VIP experience packages.
The tour’s repertoire includes songs from his solo career, cover pieces and rarities from the Who catalog. In 2024, Daltrey drew from his albums McVicar (1980), Under a Raging Moon (1985) and Rocks in the Head (1992). He also played a few songs from his last album to date, “As Long as I Have You” (2018), a collection of mostly covered pieces including the title track. In addition to big hits like “Baba O’Riley” and “Who Are You” from the Who catalog, the program also included deep cuts like “Love Ain’t for Keeping” from “Who’s Next” and “Another Tricky Day” from “Face Dances”.
Many of the musicians joining Daltrey on this tour are already familiar to Who fans, as they were also part of the band’s touring band on the farewell tour. These include guitarist Simon Townshend (Pete’s brother), bassist John Hogg (who also sang and played percussion with the Who) and drummer Scott Devours as well as percussionist Jody Linscott. The line-up is completed by guitarist Doug Boyle, mandolinist Billy Nicholls, violinist Katie Jacoby, harmonica player Steve Weston and keyboardist/accordionist Geraint Watkins. Anyone who has already experienced Daltrey on his semi-acoustic tour 2024 will meet exactly the same crew.
For the first time as Sir Roger
The tour is Daltrey’s first US tour since he was knighted last December and has since taken the title of Sir Roger Daltrey. Prince William performed the ceremony in recognition of Daltrey’s commitment to the Teenage Cancer Trust and his contribution to the arts. “It’s a wonderful award for me and especially for the Teenage Cancer Trust,” he said at the time. “I accept this honor not just for myself, but on behalf of all the unsung heroes who have given their energy to make the Teenage Cancer Trust the success it is today.”
