The organizing committee of the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps wants to enter into “exclusive discussions” with the Thialf skating stadium in Heerenveen with a view to organizing the Olympic skating tournament. The French news agency AFP reported this on Monday.
The organizers had already decided that no new skating stadium would be built in France for the 2030 Games. In addition to Heerenveen, Turin, which hosted the Winter Games in 2006, was also in the picture for the skating tournament. Now, according to AFP, the organizing committee has asked the board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for permission to enter into exclusive discussions with Heerenveen.
Final approval of the proposed sports locations by the IOC must take place at the end of June. If the tournament is awarded to Heerenveen, the Winter Olympics would be held, albeit partly, in the Netherlands for the first time in history.
